Cheetah loses fastest animal title to the humble mite
'The cheetah is the fastest land animal on earth' this is what was taught to the majority, and recently, this fact has been proven wrong. The cheetah can run at speeds 60 miles per hour, however, if measured based on body lengths per second, the humble mite is faster.
A junior and physics major at Pitzer Collegenamed named Samuel Rubin claims that the cheetah can dole out 116 body lengths per second at its top speed of 60 miles per hour, while the mite can do up to 322 body lengths per second. This research will benefit physics in a way that will change the way animal speeds are measured and help understand how animals manage such speeds in the first place.
In another study related to the latter, by Jonathan Wright, Ph.D., a Prof. of biology at Pomona College, it is stated that stride frequency and speed relative to body size increase with decrease in size of animals. According the Wright, their team is making an effort to identify whether or not there is a limit to the relative speed or stride frequency that can be reached.
